Apple vs Samsung saga comes to Australian shores

Apple Samsung

The next installment in the global patent infringement dispute between Samsung Electronics and Apple is under way in Australia in a trial that's scheduled to last for three months.

Apple has accused Samsung of copying the design and function of some of its tablet and smartphone devices.

Samsung has counter-sued Apple for allegedly breaching patents related to wireless transmission technology.
Initiated by Apple in the US in April 2011, the dispute has spread to countries throughout Europe and Asia.

Temporary injunctions on the sale of Samsung devices were issued in the US in the past month ahead of a formal trial there.

The opposing claims in Australia are being dealt with together in a single Federal Court hearing before Justice Annabelle Bennett.

Court documents indicate the case is scheduled to be heard until mid-October in proceedings that will be closely-watched ahead of subsequent formal hearings in the US and Europe.

A temporary injunction on the sale of Samsung's Galaxy 10.1 tablet in Australia ahead of the formal trial was lifted on appeal late last year.

In opening submissions today, Samsung's lawyer Neil Young outlined technical details of three patents related to wireless transmission technology.

He also requested that Samsung and Apple's claims be heard in separate trails, but agreed to make the same request later in the trail.
