London Olympics - Day 2

Nine wins ratings gold

The second day of the Olympics propelled Nine to ratings gold last night as 2.144 million people tuned in to the network’s early evening coverage.

The Olympic broadcast, which covered swimming, cycling and diving among others, ran from 6.30pm to 11pm.

The 11pm to 1am coverage dipped below the 2 million mark but there was still strong interest in the archery, boxing and fencing with 1.919 million people tuning in, according to OzTam’s preliminary overnight metro ratings.

Nine’s 2pm London Gold broadcast of the Olympic highlights from day one was the sixth most watched programme with 902,000 viewers.

The lure of the Olympics turned viewers off the typical ratings powerhouses, only 752,000 viewers tuned in to MasterChef Australia All Stars.

The programme was Sunday night’s seventh most watched and follows its premier which wooed 1.26 million viewers only three nights earlier.

The ABC’s Grand Designs Revisited found itself in the top 10 with 707,000 viewers.

Seven’s only non-news and current affairs programme to make the top 10 was Once Upon A Time in ninth with 711,000.

Nine News was the most watched news offering with 1.737 million viewers followed by Seven News with 1.334 million while ABC News pulled in an audience of 728,000.

Seven’s Sunday Night was watched by 1.219 million viewers.
