Seven's new boss to Don the mantle on The West Australian

The man who replaced David Leckie as head of Seven West Media will deliver his first speech to advertisers and media agencies not on the future direction of the Seven Network, but on The West Australian newspaper.

Don Voelte, the American former CEO of oil company Woodside Petroluem, will speak to key clients almost a month after being named as the surprise replacement for Leckie.

The decision to focus on The West Australian and not the bigger and higher profile Seven Network in his maiden address to the advertising community will come as a surprise given that the share price of the group has plunged in recent days after media analysts said it would need to raise between $400m and $500m to reduce its debt ratio.

Many media buyers that B&T spoke to at the time of Voelte’s appointment on June 26 did not know much about the new Seven boss, despite the fact he has been on the Seven West Media board since 2008.

The Seven Network has looked vulnerable this year against a resurgent Nine and many advertisers would prefer to hear his thoughts on the direction and strategy of the channel.
The invitation only breakfast is being held at the Westin Hotel in Sydney on July 24 where he will talk about the evolution of the WA newspaper.

A spokesperson for Seven West Media said: “Mr Voelte will give a different perspective to the newspaper business in WA, far from the gloom that certain publishers have been pronouncing.
“Don is keen to give insight to the exciting evolution The West Australian has been undertaking for the past three years and the strengths this gives advertisers and confidence it should provide for media agencies.”
