Welcome to Fairfax digital Android users

Fairfax Media has expanded its digital offering, launching an Android version of its iPad and iPhone apps for both The Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne's The Age.

Similar to the Apple apps, the Android apps will allow users to download stories and features from that day and the past week's newspaper as well as interactive versions of the daily sudoku and crossword puzzles.

Fairfax's director of mobile for its metro mastheads, Rick Gleave, said that the apps are designed to take advantage of a fast-growing market.

"The launch today of these apps will enable us to engage with Fairfax audiences across Android tablet devices and to take commercial advantage of this rapidly expanding segment by offering increased tablet inventory for advertisers," Gleave said.

Fairfax's iPad apps have proven popular, with the company reporting that the Herald and The Age apps had 305,000 and 273,000 downloads respectively from launch until May.

The apps, available in beta format will be accessible for Android tablets from Samsung, Motorola and Asus from the Google Play store.
