Goondiwindi, QLD starts Facebook petition for Big W store

A Goondiwindi Facebook page called Bring Big W to Goondiwindi, has caused a storm of debate.

Some have been slightly edited due to space however all the comments are on the Big W for Goondiwindi Facebook page.   Below are just a few of them.

"Hi all, so I’ve created this page to get some sort of indication of how many people would like Big W in Goondiwindi. Having such a large chain here will keep more people shopping in Goondiwindi and it is going to create many jobs. The more likes we get the more leverage I guess we would have with the local council, Big W and any entrepreneurs (SP) out there that may be able to make this happen for our community. If you have any info regarding how we can make this happen for our town, or if you have any Pros and Cons you’d like to share please post on the wall. For me personally as a parent I like to go away for shopping and I always go to Big W, for the savings and the variety. We are just about to have ANOTHER discount chain open in Goondiwindi which will be number three, I find this ridiculous as they all stock the same products! Yet the council can’t understand why we still choose to travel to larger towns for shopping, I’d much rather spend my hard earned dollars in town, but I just can’t seem to get the things I need. Let us band together and have a say in what shops come to town."

From the Facebook page

"It all comes down to commercial viability. We are extremely well serviced for a town of about 6000. As the executive officer of the chamber of commerce I’m all for keeping people in town to shop. That is why I started the shop local Gundy gift cards. I would be surprised if Big W would consider Gundy large enough even with the surrounding towns it services. If Big W were to come to Gundy then I would expect some smaller businesses would be forced to close. Where in town would it be located? There is no area in the CBD large enough for a Big W. So it would have to be built on the outskirts of town. This then removes traffic and customers from our main st and would mean less cafe’s and more empty stores. The start of a ghost town. Gundy is a vibrant town that is far busier than most small towns of similar size. Be very careful what you wish for.
Also just remember who sponsors all the sports teams in town. I recently surveyed small businesses in Gundy to ask how much they donate to sports teams and events. Just our members alone donate over $300,000 per year to support kids who play sports and the events that adults enjoy. I would strongly encourage people to recognise this before they head out of town to shop. Gundy would be a poorer place if generous small businesses were closed due to the opening of a Big W."
