Hardware turf war heats up in WA

It will be ‘hard war’ in Joondalup with hardware giants Bunnings and Masters set to go head to head after they were given approval last week to build stores across the road from each other

The stores, owned by Wesfarmers and Woolworths respectively, will be built on either side of Sundew Rise at the corner of Joondalup Drive.

Approval was given by the north-west metropolitan development assessment panel at its meeting in Joondalup on Wednesday.

At the meeting, representatives from Bunnings argued that the proposed right-hand turn off Sundew Rise into the Masters car park should be scrapped.

Lavan Legal partner Paul McQueen said Bunnings was not objecting on commercial grounds and welcomed competition.

“There is a concern the right-hand turn could cause congestion and safety issues,” he said.

The panel approved the Masters development, including the right-hand turn. Masters state development manager John Young said the $17 million store would employ 150 people.

“We are looking forward to bringing competition to the area,” he said.

Bunnings managing director John Gillam said he was pleased with the approval.

“Bunnings is currently reviewing the planning conditions and working towards finalising plans,” he said.
