Bunnings sow the seeds of community

Queensland's Branyan Road State School students spent this morning planting vegetables, thanks to a generous donation from Bunnings.

School principal Teeny Patterson said the joint project between the school and the hardware giant allowed nine students with disabilities to create a vibrant vegetable garden, with the help of their parents, school staff and Bunnings team members.

"Bunnings have been involved with the project for a few years now," Mrs Patterson said.

"Before the June holidays some of our parents worked with Bunnings, who donated the timber and soil, to build larger garden beds.

"Bunning also donated seedling which our groundsman looked over the holidays, and today they were all planted."

Mrs Patterson said the project was a wonderful way for the students to see the results of their work.
"The students will care for the seedlings, water them, weed around the plants and harvest the produce," she said.

"It's a wonderful way for them to be able to see their work bear fruit."

Mrs Patterson said the produce, which included carrots, herbs, tomatoes and beetroots, would be sold at a market day later in the year or used in recipes for school cooking projects.

"Any money the students raise from selling the produce will be used to purchase more seedlings so they can plant summer vegetables," she said.
