Power generator Macquarie Generation has been accused of manipulating wholesale electricity prices in an effort to recoup losses due to the federal government's carbon tax, according to Fairfax Media.
According to the report, the Australian Energy Regulator has recorded unusually large electricity price rises since the introduction of the tax.
The regulator said that Macquarie withheld some electricity supply on successive days recently, immediately driving wholesale prices higher.
Macquarie's move was recorded in New South Wales, but unusual activity has also been noticed in the both Victorian and South Australian markets.
''Since the commencement of the carbon price, spot prices in the [wholesale] market have been higher than anticipated,'' the AER said in a report.
